Daylight Saving Time Dates: When Clocks Change in 2026 and 2027

Exact dates when clocks spring forward and fall back in the US, UK, EU, and Australia for 2026 and 2027. Plus a list of countries that do not observe DST.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) shifts clocks forward in spring and back in autumn to make better use of daylight during longer summer days. The catch: different countries change their clocks on different dates, which creates a narrow window every spring and autumn when the time difference between regions shifts by one hour. If you schedule international calls without accounting for this, someone always ends up an hour early or an hour late.

United States DST Dates: 2026 and 2027

The United States observes DST under the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Clocks spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November. Each change happens at 2:00 AM local time.

2027Sunday, March 14, 2027 at 2:00 AMSunday, November 7, 2027 at 2:00 AM

Most US states observe DST. The two exceptions are Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii, both of which stay on standard time year-round. Indiana fully adopted DST in 2006 and is no longer an exception.

European Union and UK DST Dates: 2026 and 2027

EU member states and the UK spring forward on the last Sunday of March and fall back on the last Sunday of October. The change happens at 1:00 AM UTC (2:00 AM local time in CET countries).

The EU has repeatedly discussed abolishing DST. A 2018 European Parliament vote supported ending the practice, but the proposal has stalled at the Council level. Until formal legislation passes, EU member states continue to observe DST on the schedule above.

Australia DST Dates: 2026 and 2027

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are opposite to North America and Europe. Australian DST begins in October and ends in April. Not all states participate: Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory do not observe DST.

States that observe Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT, UTC+11) include New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory. South Australia observes its own ACDT (UTC+10:30). Queensland stays on AEST (UTC+10) all year.

The US–EU Clock-Change Gap

Because the US and EU change their clocks on different dates, there is a brief window each spring and autumn when the transatlantic time difference is one hour different from usual.

In spring 2026: The US springs forward on March 8, but Europe does not spring forward until March 29. During those three weeks (March 8–28), New York is only 4 hours behind London instead of the usual 5. In autumn 2026: Europe falls back on October 25, but the US does not fall back until November 1. During that week (October 25–31), New York is 6 hours behind London instead of the usual 5.

Countries That Do Not Observe DST

The majority of the world does not observe daylight saving time. Countries near the equator see little seasonal variation in daylight hours, making the practice impractical. Many countries have also abolished DST in recent decades.

  • Japan (JST, UTC+9) — no DST since 1952
  • China (CST, UTC+8) — no DST since 1991
  • India (IST, UTC+5:30) — never observed DST
  • Most of Africa — equatorial and tropical regions see minimal daylight variation
  • Most of Southeast Asia — Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines
  • Russia (MSK, UTC+3) — abolished permanent DST in 2014, now on permanent standard time
  • Turkey (TRT, UTC+3) — abolished DST in 2016, now on permanent summer time
  • Argentina, Brazil (most states) — Brazil abolished DST in 2019
  • Arizona, USA — observes Mountain Standard Time year-round (Navajo Nation excepted)
  • Hawaii, USA — observes Hawaii Standard Time year-round
  • Iceland — observes GMT year-round with no summer shift

Frequently asked questions

Does the US still have daylight saving time?
Yes. As of 2026, the United States still observes DST. Congress has considered the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make DST permanent, but it has not been enacted into law. Until legislation passes, US clocks continue to spring forward in March and fall back in November.
What countries do not change their clocks?
The majority of the world does not observe DST. Major countries that stay on a fixed offset year-round include Japan, China, India, Russia, Turkey, most of Africa, most of Southeast Asia, and most of the Middle East. In the US, Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii do not observe DST.
What is the time difference between New York and London during the gap period?
Normally New York (ET) is 5 hours behind London (GMT/BST) when both are on standard time, and 5 hours behind when both are on summer time. During the gap in spring 2026 (March 8 to March 28), the US has already sprung forward but the UK has not, so New York is only 4 hours behind London. During the autumn gap (October 25 to November 1), the UK has fallen back but the US has not, so New York is 6 hours behind London.
Does Arizona observe DST?
Most of Arizona does not observe DST. The state stays on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) year-round, which means it aligns with PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) in summer rather than MDT. The exception is the Navajo Nation, which spans parts of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico and does observe DST to maintain consistency across its full territory.
When do clocks change in 2027?
In the United States: clocks spring forward on March 14, 2027 and fall back on November 7, 2027. In the EU and UK: clocks spring forward on March 28, 2027 and fall back on October 31, 2027. In Australia (eastern states): clocks spring forward on October 4, 2026 and fall back on April 4, 2027.
